AMA Urges Facebook, Amazon and others to Help Combat Illicit Vaping Sales

Share:

October 16, 2019

The American Medical Association on Oct. 4 sent a letter to CEOs of the nation’s five largest e-commerce websites asking them to help combat sales of illicit vaping products.

The letter urged the CEOs of Amazon, Microsoft, LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram to “remain vigilant” of sales of illicit vaping products or items that could be used to create counterfeit vaping products on their sites.

“It is time for e-commerce companies to take action to ban the sale of materials fueling the counterfeit vaping crisis,” James Madara, MD, executive vice president and CEO of the AMA, wrote in the letter. “We urge you to actively enforce your existing policies to keep illicit products off the market and out of the hands of people who are, often unwittingly, putting their lives at risk. Given the pace at which vaping-related lung illness is expanding, there is no time to waste.”
