The leader of Medicare’s innovation center, Adam Boehler, is expected to unveil a new model for primary care physician payments in coming weeks, according to STAT.
Mr. Boehler, who CMS tapped in December 2017 as director of the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation, said he wants to “blow up” how America pays for primary care. To do so, he plans to revamp physician visits.
Under a revamped model, Mr. Boehler’s office would call for primary care physicians to use modern techniques to keep patient care in the home setting and out of hospitals. Such techniques include telehealth and online consultations, according to STAT.
In June 2018, HHS Secretary Alex Azar appointed Mr. Boehler as senior adviser for value-based transformation and innovation in addition to his CMMI position. At the time, Mr. Azar said, “At CMMI, [Mr. Boehler] has already demonstrated an ambition for bold change, and will now be able to bring his deep experience with private sector innovation to help HHS execute on the long-talked-about goal of transforming our healthcare system into one that pays for value.”
